Project Overview

Evyve is one of the UK’s fastest-growing public charging networks, with a rollout programme that’s turning concepts into commissioned sites every few weeks. The Grange retail complex in Chelmsford was selected as a flagship hub in the East of England — a busy retail setting where visibility, accessibility and pace of delivery would be put to the test.
  • Six Rapid DC Chargers Supporting High-Demand Retail Traffic

The Grange site integrates six next-generation DC chargers designed to handle a constant flow of retail and leisure visitors. With multiple anchor tenants on-site, charger availability and turnover were crucial to achieving the operator’s ambitious utilisation targets.

  • Delivered as Part of Evyve’s Accelerated 2025 Expansion Plan

This project formed a key part of Evyve’s national rollout strategy, a high-speed programme aiming to deploy dozens of new sites across the UK in record time while maintaining quality and user satisfaction benchmarks across every location.

  • Formula Space Package Covering Every Above-Ground Element

From bay marking and signage to crash protection, lighting, CCTV and user-focused design, Formula Space delivered the full scope under its single-source model, eliminating the need for multiple contractors and ensuring every detail worked seamlessly together.

  • Critical site with Tight Timelines & Brand Consistency Requirements

The Grange’s visibility and mixed-tenant environment demanded a controlled delivery schedule and precise brand alignment. Every asset on site from colour palette to wayfinding placement was executed to reinforce Evyve’s national identity and keep the project on schedule without compromise.

The Challenge

  • Fragmented delivery chain

Multiple subcontractors for signage, crash protection, bay marking and security were creating overlap and inconsistent standards. Each trade worked to a slightly different spec, meaning more admin, more site visits and more opportunities for small errors to multiply.

  • Late-stage surprises

Drainage alignment, uneven sub-bases and incomplete utility information were being discovered only once civils began. Those “surprises in the ground” risked delaying energisation dates and inflating budgets.

  • Cost volatility

Inconsistent scopes and reactive fixes made like-for-like cost comparison impossible across sites. Evyve needed price certainty to forecast the next 40 locations.

  • Maintaining brand clarity

At high-traffic destinations, competing signage and retail clutter can erode brand presence. Ensuring Evyve’s visual identity stayed consistent across mixed-tenant sites was critical for driver recognition and trust.

The Formula Space Solution

Formula Space provided a consolidated package covering feasibility, design and on-site execution — all aligned to Evyve’s wider rollout programme.

  • Early-stage feasibility

Our technical design team identified drainage, access and gradient issues at concept stage, enabling low-cost fixes before any ground was broken. Capturing risks on paper costs pennies; fixing them in concrete costs thousands.

  • Wayfinding & instructional signage

A full signage matrix was developed using PAS 1899 guidance to ensure logical driver flow and accessibility. Clear, brand-aligned signage reduced driver search time by up to 50 %, improving turnover per bay and overall site utilisation.

  • High-contrast PAS 1899 bay marking

Formula Space delivered durable infill markings with directional arrows and accessible-bay hatching for maximum legibility. The design language established here now informs Evyve’s national bay-marking standard.

  • Crash-protection suite

A combination of retention-socket bollards and rubber wheel stops provided physical defence without compromising accessibility. Each asset was positioned using precise CAD overlays of charger swing-zones to prevent impact damage and downtime.

  • HD CCTV & deterrent signage

The site received a fully networked CCTV solution with visible deterrent signage. Studies show crime in car parks drops by over 50 % when CCTV is installed — a simple addition that boosts user confidence, especially for late-night charging.

  • “Formula Space’s single-source package slotted straight into our build programme, kept standards tight and freed our team to focus on the next wave of hubs. If you’re serious about scaling at speed, you want them in your corner.”

How we deliver at pace

Create. Deliver. Sustain.

A complete EV charging site solution from one accountable partner.

CREATE

Early collaboration through feasibility mapping and 3D layout modelling established a replicable site template. Each design decision from line colour to bollard placement was benchmarked against accessibility and utilisation metrics.

DELIVER

Standardised product kits (signage, crash protection, bay materials, CCTV) arrived pre-assembled and colour-calibrated for quick fit-out. This approach cut on-site time and removed dependency on multiple third parties.

SUSTAIN

Post-handover, Formula Space continues to support Evyve with periodic audits, product warranties and future-site adaptations. The same specifications now roll out to new locations, ensuring every site performs and feels identical to the last.
